By Dr. Yuri Belopolsky

The medical art that we call “acupuncture” in western world is actually coming from Chinese name that means “acupuncture and moxibustion”:

Acupuncture and moxibustion are two main equally important tools of the Traditional Chinese Medical art. They can be used separately or together for treatment.

Moxibustion is a method of treating and preventing diseases with the help of a warming effect of moxa cigars and/or cones made of the common herb – mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris). Heat applied to acupuncture points or other areas of the skin for therapeutic purposes produces a variety of positive effects. There are many different types of moxa and, depending on patient condition, different techniques of application.

Moxibustion can warm/nourish or cool/disperse the acupuncture point or problematic area of the body. It can move stagnation of Qi, blood or phlegm, “dissolve” a fresh bruise/hematoma, calm the spirit or balance the flow of Qi.

The smoke of burning moxa has a soothing effect and may promote relaxation.
